We are committed to developing values, skills, knowledge, confidence and character in our scholars that will propel them to success in school, college, and career, and lead them to experience a happy, contributory life.
Welcome from Our Head of School
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Welcome to Empowerment Academy Charter School! I am thrilled to lead our beautiful school which was founded in 2015, as a tuition free, public charter school in the vibrant and diverse Jersey City community. At Empowerment Academy, we know the impact of educating young children in our society and the positive effect they will have on the international community. Here’s what makes our school different:
• A high-expectations/no excuses academic culture combined with a caring and fun school climate.
• Emphasis on the development of positive values, habits, character and community
• “Planned Joy” moments every day in every classroom
• A longer school day with more time for critical learning
• A carefully sequenced curriculum, aligned with all state and common core standards
• A primary grade pedagogy that makes use of delivery techniques borrowed from children’s
theater such as exaggerated expression, choral response, song and rhyme
• Extensive curriculum-aligned formative and through-course assessments
• A novel system of class prefects and peer tutoring
• Teacher training in, and use of, Teach Like a Champion pedagogical techniques within an innovative, highly-effective teach cycle that ends almost every lesson with a check for understanding
• Top quality educators who benefit by extensive instructional coaching and professional
• Intensive teacher tutoring when a student exhibits difficulty mastering a standard
• A sophisticated academic performance monitoring and parental communication system
It is this commitment to educating the young boys and girls of this city that continues our work. This year we are celebrating our second
year of providing a unique and exciting educational option to our students and their families. Our first cohort of students performed exceptionally well on the nationally normed Terra Nova assessments which showed that Empowerment Academy scholars are making learning gains that are 60% faster than the average in America’s public schools!
Visitors to our school often ask me, “What is it that makes Empowerment Academy unique?” My answer is simple: Empowerment Academy is a school which sets very high expectations for its students—ethically, academically, and in character, —but one in which teachers work with amazing diligence and care to help all students meet those expectations. It is a school whose wide offerings in academics, the arts, and extracurricular activities give students incredible opportunities to discover their unique gifts and talents and to develop the confidence that grows from knowing that they have something of value to contribute to others. And for parents who want their children challenged with high expectations in a warm, supportive environment, Empowerment Academy is the best investment in a child’s future. Our model is designed to empower each student to build strong character, demonstrate critical thinking, possess a core body of knowledge, and be on predictive path for academic success and success in life!
As you walk into our building you will be introduced to our warm and joyful school culture built on the notion that all children can be empowered to achieve and contribute greatly to the world! Our classrooms are named after colleges and universities so that our students learn early on that the future is full of opportunities for those who work hard. <p>
Families are essential partners in this work, and we provide numerous opportunities for families to be actively involved in their children’s education. Beginning with daily parent communication, monthly school & family events, parent information workshops and field trips; EACS truly values our collaborative relationship with families.

-The Founding Administration
Arts, Music, Science, Technology and Foreign Language Instruction
These days, it is not uncommon to find schools lacking in the area of arts, music, science, technology and foreign language programs. But you will not find that at Empowerment Academy: our scholars will benefit by first-rate instruction and school resources in these areas.
The Founders of Empowerment Academy Charter School include Bret Schundler, the former Mayor of Jersey City and former New Jersey State Commissioner of Education, and many long-time Jersey City supporters of improved educational and recreational opportunities for our children. Many of our Founders served as volunteers assisting the Founders of BelovED Community Charter School with the start-up of their school. In addition, Bret Schundler was the Lead Founder and former Board of Trustees Chairman of Golden Door Charter School.
As our Founders now work to make Empowerment Academy Charter School successful, they will be leveraging not just their past experience helping to found highly effective charter schools, but also their relationships with local education, youth, arts, cultural, social service and health organizations.
To provide one example, Empowerment Academy Charter School and BelovED Community Charter School have executed a shared services agreement relating to their business administration, bus transportation and other school support services. This creates administrative cost-efficiencies that leaves more money available for classroom resources.
You can read more about them here.
As per the United States Environmental Protection Agency’s “Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act” [(AHERA) 40 CFR Part 763], an inspection for the presence of asbestos-containing building materials has been completed, and an Asbestos Management Plan developed, for Empowerment Academy Charter School.
The inspection report and asbestos management plan file are available for review in the school office during normal school/office hours. Upon request, copies will be provided for a reasonable charge.
As required by the USEPA, additional inspections of the school are conducted every six months by properly accredited staff of the Archdiocese of Newark (the school’s landlord).
